In 1987, there was a military conflict in the border between China and India. The conflict was fairly short. Crossfire lasted about a month. Details of this conflict remain mostly unknown. But at least 16 Indian soldiers were killed. Six bodies were handed over to an Indian authority by the Chinese army, suggesting that the Indian military likely invaded China’s territory.

China - India Military Conflict

In 1988, China engaged a small scale military action against Vietnam.  The cause for the conflit was Vietnam attempted to stop the construction of a Chinese military post in the Spratly Islands. China No 522 frigate sent seven soldiers to the Fiery Cross Reef. For the first time they raised the Chinese flag in the Spratly. On Jan 31, Vietnam dispatched two armed ships to the reef and attempted to seize it. The conflict started. In the end, Vietnam suffered serious casualties, with 60 being killed. Two ships were completely destroyed. On the Chinese side, only one soldier was slightly injured. During this conflict, China not only defended the Yongshu reef but took back three other reefs from Vietnam’s occupations.

In 2004, with the assistance from Tajikistan government army, China’s special forces entered the Tajikistan to raid an armed element of the East Turkestan terrorist group. The element included 200 members, a large number of advanced weapons and equipments. During the engagement, Chinese military dispatched 6 army helicopters, 9 armed jeeps and 12 armored vehicles. The crossfire lasted about 30 minutes. Chinese forces faced very strong resistance in the beginning but defeated the enemy rather quickly. In this fight, China also suffered significant casualties – 19 died, over 20 wounded.
