An untold history: how human started putting clothes on
During the early period of human history, people used to hide themselves behind rocks or inside the woods at night. The forests then were full of dangers as a variety of ferocious beasts wandered around everywhere. In terms of life, you had only two choices: either ate others or being eaten by others. That was all about surviving. Especially at night, human ancestors were always surrounded by unpredictable horrors and irresistible disasters. They could easily be found by bloodthirsty beasts anytime and became their divine foods.
In that tough environment, our ancestors eventually leant how to dig the ground and capture preys through traps.
During a period spanned thousands of years, our ancestors had worked hard to develop their unique homes – caves, and make them comfortable and beautiful. Perhaps, for those who know Moore’s Law well, it’s a piece of cake to learn one or two things over thousands of years. However, with the limited and primitive wisdoms, it was indeed an epoch-making feat for our ancestors to learn even one surviving skill. I believe that skill was not any easier than Apollo’s moon landing in the modern history.
Our ancestors lived in the same forests, in the same cold weather, for a long time. Their lifestyles along with their appearances and activities hadn’t seen much change until one day when they captured a big animal. The animal was a deer. They shared the meats and threw away the skin. As time went by, they captured more animals. The left over animal skins started piling up. So they decided to have some fun with them. They grabbed a piece of deer skin and threw it around, just like we throw a basketball nowadays. They got tired after playing for a while. So they lay down on the ground to take a break. One of them accidentally covered the skin on his body but immediately felt warmth that he had never experienced before. He told his playmates about his comfortable feeling. The words spread out quickly. Soon it became a common sense in our ancestor’s society that furs could keep their bodies warm. After that, they didn’t throw away animal skins anymore.
A great invention came into being inadvertently. Today when we dress up for work, for meeting, for banquet or for dating, we should all appreciate that moment of “covering” by one of the primitives. It was that covering that changed the history of the world. Unfortunately, that moment wasn’t captured by a camera.
Started that point, the human being had a powerful weapon against cold. That “covering” hasn’t been taken off human’s body since then. I am sure, the only purpose for our ancestors to wear the furs initially was to protect them from cold; they didn’t have any intentions to show off. I can also bet, they must have felt uncomfortable when first wearing furs as they were so used to nudities. But for fighting against cold, they had no other choices.
With clothes on, the human being made a historical step in its evolution. However, hairs and skins of human’s bodies have started to retrograde since – skins kept thinning; hairs gradually came off until only being seen today in local areas, such as top of head, under armpit and around the genital area.
Nevertheless, the sanctimonious human being formally stepped on the stage of history after putting clothes on.
